Fog hangs in the forest canopy adding atmosphere to this amazing woodland environment on a morning hike along one of our favorite sections of the Appalachian Trail in the Roan Mountain Highlands of western NC and eastern TN.
This lovely section of the Appalachian Trail winds through a rare ecosystem of southern spruce-fir forest, comprised of red spruce and Fraser fir trees that house many unique species of plant and animal life that thrive in altitudes over 5500ft., before the trail opens up over vast alpine meadows with 360 degree scenic views and large natural gardens of native flame azalea and catawba rhododendron. The captivating natural beauty and the unique environments on display in this area make it one of our favorite places to enjoy a walk in the woods.
Wherever you are right now, I hope you'll take a moment and enjoy the view!
