Crepuscular light rays breaking through the clouds and raining down over the endless layers of peaks and ridges in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina. What a thrill it was to be standing there when the heavy cloud cover opened up and allowed these intense rays to light up the scene in front of me on this beautiful summer evening along the Blue Ridge Parkway. These are the moments I cherish, waiting and watching the clouds at some incredible scenic overlook like this one just east of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, hoping to see something special happen. Every once in a while you get lucky and your efforts are rewarded with a landscape picture that tells the story, allowing the moment to live on and be enjoyed by others for years to come.
