Sunrise over the Bodie Island Lighthouse in the Outer Banks of North Carolina is always a treat. Before the first tour begins and the 214 spiral steps are open to the public, there is a profound silence at the Bodie Island Light Station. Standing at the edge of the freshwater marsh, you can hear the distant Atlantic and the low hum of the 1,000-watt beacon still sweeping its 19-mile path across the Graveyard of the Atlantic. For a landscape photographer, you can feel the anticipation of capturing a photograph during that brief window when the 156-foot black and white tower is caught between the retreating stars and the first warmth of the Outer Banks sun.

After an early wakeup and a short drive from Nags Head, NC, exploring the historic Bodie Island Lighthouse at this magical hour really showcases the peace and picturesque nature of the OBX national seashore.
