A spectacular sunrise sky hangs over the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse in the town of Manteo on Roanoke Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We were lucky enough to witness this amazing pink and purple sunrise over the lighthouse from the waterfront boardwalk on a cool November morning during our trip to the OBX and coastal North Carolina last autumn.

Just a short drive from Nags Head in the Outer Banks of NC, Manteo is a wonderful little harborside village on Roanoke Island that features a quiet waterfront park that is home to this lovely little screw-pile lighthouse, which is a recreation of the original that remained in operation until 1955. This current version now houses exhibits on Roanoke's maritime heritage. The island itself is probably best known for being the site of the famous "Lost Colony" that was founded here in 1587, the first chapter in the story of a place that's rich with historical significance as well as it's considerable scenic beauty.
