Sunrise on the beach at the Nags Head Fishing Pier in Nags Head, NC. What a great time shooting with good friends on this gorgeous autumn morning in the Outer Banks, with the waves crashing into me and the smell of salt water in the air.
If you frequent the OBX, you know that windy conditions along the coast can be pretty common there. The fairly high winds on this morning gave us some very active surf to work with, which was simply beautiful to look at as the golden sunlight highlighted the action of the waves and the details of the old wooden fishing pier. It was also extremely invigorating to be out there right in the middle of the action. With large waves crashing onto the beach and aggressively running up the sand toward me, I was repeatedly forced to lift my camera gear high above my head as the salt water slammed into my legs and splashed right up over the front of me. Then came the race to plant the camera and capture the wild rush of water as it tried to pull me with it back out into the sea. There are many peaceful mornings out in the wild for a photographer capturing landscapes at sunrise, but this was the art of landscape photography as a contact sport, and I can't wait to get out there and do it all again!
