A passing thunderstorm provides great drama and light at sunrise as the ocean waves rush through an erosion control breakwater structure in this fine art photography print taken in Folly Beach South Carolina just south of Charleston SC.

I shot this picture just after sunrise during an early morning walk on Folly Beach, right as a passing thunderstorm was clearing out over the ocean. The storm clouds overhead mixed with heavy rain falling toward the horizon added some nice drama to the scene, while the golden morning sun settled on the waves rushing in across the beach and wrapping around this weathered wooden structure that was beautifully accented by bright pops of green from the algae growing on it.

Being out there along the coast chasing the light at dawn, fully immersed in the energy of the weather and the ocean, is always an amazing experience. Then, as you stand there watching it all unfold, the action starts to fade into the background and you’re hit with this overwhelming sense of calm and peace that makes you slow down and just take it all in. I hope this print captures some of that powerful mix of drama and soothing calm that so often coexists in nature.
