Ancient Angel Oak Tree near Charleston SC

Landscape photography print featuring the incredible Angel Oak Tree on Johns Island south of Charleston SC. This ancient Southern Live Oak tree is an icon in the lowcountry with it's massive, low-sweeping branches that arch gracefully to the ground like outstretched wings, creating a sheltered and cathedral-like space beneath. It is a very impressive sight to see in person and well worth the visit if you are in the Charleston area.

Officially estimated at 400–500 years old (with some local lore suggesting it could be even older), this legendary live oak tree stands 66 feet tall with a 28-foot trunk circumference and a vast canopy spreading out over 17,000 square feet — its longest branches reaching nearly 190 feet. It has endured centuries of hurricanes, earthquakes, and human history, becoming a symbol of resilience and natural wonder in the Lowcountry.

With this photograph I wanted to capture the tree’s raw size, strength, and ethereal grace, highlighting the gnarled beauty that has inspired awe for countless generations.
