Blue Ridge Parkway scenic landscape photography featuring beautiful warm October light breaking through the clouds and highlighting the autumn foliage in the mountains just outside of Cherokee, NC, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The region now known to most people as The Great Smoky Mountains is known to the Cherokee as Shaconage, which is a native Cherokee word that is generally said to translate as "land of the blue smoke". It's certainly a fitting description for these beautiful mountains making reference to the trademark blue haze that they are well known for, and as such became the inspiration for the eventual naming of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. While it's appearance can change quite a bit depending on the lighting and atmospheric conditions at the time, this image seemed to be a good example of the "blue smoke" that originally earned them the name Shaconage.
